The latest? Well, according to the China Times and the Commercial Times, a publication based in Taiwan, Apple is currently prepping a new 4.8-inch smart phone tentatively dubbed the "iPhone Math." The Math, the two reports indicate (hat tip to Marketwatch), could launch as soon as June, putting the device well ahead of the yearly iPhone refresh, which typically occurs in the fall (the iPhone 5 was unveiled in September, as was the iPhone 4S).?

It's not clear exactly what's going on with the name ? it could be some kind of reference to the bump in screen size to 4.8-inches from the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5. Or, as?Chloe Albanesius of PC Magazine notes, it could be some kind of translation error. At any rate, this is all very preliminary stuff, and Apple has not issued any comment.

So take all this Math talk with a heaping spoonful of salt.?

Still, the idea of a bigger iPhone does make a certain kind of sense. After all, although former Apple CEO Steve Jobs once said 3.5-inches was the perfect size for a smartphone display, Apple expanded the display from 3.5 inches to 4 inches for the iPhone 5 ? an attempt to keep up with massive gadgets such as the HTC Droid DNA and Samsung Galaxy S III.?

"I'm with Steve Jobs in his admonition that you shouldn't live somebody else's life, and should think for yourself," writes Jonny Evans, the Apple Whisperer over at Computerworld. "In the case of the latest 4.8-inch iPhone rumor, there's for and against arguments aplenty, but nothing is 'the truth' until Apple finally plays its hand.?However, I can't believe the company would release a product with as unattractive a name as 'iPhone Math.' "

In related news, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that Apple was working on a bargain-basement iPhone handset, which?could resemble the boxy?iPhone 4?and?iPhone 5, but be built with far cheaper materials.

Vitor Belfort?s war of words with Chael Sonnen shows he is crazy like a fox

After beating Michael Bisping in a middleweight bout at UFC on FX 7, Vitor Belfort said he wanted a shot at the UFC light heavyweight belt. He called Chael Sonnen a clown, and asked for a "champion vs. champion" shot at Jon Jones.

He continued during the UFC postfight show on Fuel.

?[Sonnen] is a clown. Get out. Get out of the way. He just got knocked out pretty bad by Anderson Silva then he fights Jon Jones. He doesn?t deserve the reality show. Let me fight - real champion versus real champion. I know he?s a good athlete, but he needs to go to the back of the line. Let me fight the rematch.?

Belfort fought Jones in September and lost by submission. Sonnen will fight Jones in April after the conclusion of "The Ultimate Fighter." They will coach against each other on the show. Sonnen, a commentator on the postfight show, immediately responded.

?Let me be really clear and speak directly to you Vitor. You have been telling the world that you want to meet Jesus and I will gladly arrange that travel, but first I am going to get rid of Jon Jones, then you are next. Vitor, I accept. Don?t make any mistake about that. You have called me out twice now,? Sonnen said.

Their war of words continued on Twitter.

Belfort's vitriol at Sonnen seemed so out of place. Belfort is a middleweight, and if he's looking for another shot at the light heavyweight title, perhaps he should look for a middleweight fight first?

But what Belfort did do was set himself up perfectly for an injury replacement if Sonnen or Jones were to suffer one. This has happened in three of the last four seasons of TUF, so it's not a bad idea on Belfort's part. Considering Sonnen got their light heavyweight title shot after fighting at middleweight for years, and Nick Diaz got one after a suspension and a loss, there's not much rhyme or reason to the UFC's title match making these days. Belfort is making a smart play based on recent history.

91% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (188) | Top Critics (45) | Fresh (172) | Rotten (16)

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

Lawrence, in her most high-low, sad-comic turn yet, is remarkable.

Fine mainstream sitcom material.

Writer-director David O. Russell keeps the audience guessing. He takes unexpected twists and turns as if defying you to guess what will come next.

Consistently engaging, funny, and touching. This is the kind of picture in which two hours of running time whiz by in a flash.

Silver Linings Playbook is the best movie of 2012 and the acting is mind-boggling good. Give me the Oscar picks, and it wins in every nominated category.

Succeeds less on the merits of aesthetics than its willingness to give in to crowd-pleasing effervescence.

A quirky, dramatic and totally entertaining movie that features someof the best acting of the year.

Having gone from unknown actress to Oscar nominee to "The Hunger Games" in what seemed like a blink of an eye, Lawrence shows herself a master of timing and plays off Cooper brilliantly.

Silver Linings Playbook doesn't settle for the routine or the clich?. It's a funny drama about imperfect people looking for love. It also happens to be the best romantic comedy in years.

Unique, beguiling, and occasionally frustrating: These descriptions equally apply to Silver Linings Playbook and its two central characters.

Russell keeps the outcome interesting; he knows that every silver lining has a cloud.

A feel-good film filled with laughs and memorable performances, David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook leaves you so ecstatically happy that it might just be the most recommendable movie of 2012.

The plot is clever and a bit unconventional. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro all turn in wonderful performances in this very funny, very warm comedy.

During its rocky road to becoming a fractured love story, Silver Linings Playbook and its great ensemble cast run a funny, conflict-mined, even suspenseful path. It's a total winner.

Unlike the usual run-of-the-mill rom-com, this film bristles with life from the central core of the love story, to the quirky band of supporting players who add to the fun.

With "The Silver Linings Playbook," Russell picks up the traditional quirky rom-com genre and shakes it around, just to see what happens. Where it's going is fairly predictable; how it gets there isn't.

A delightfully dysfunctional romantic comedy that's moving, funny and features just the right amount of crazy love.

A tenderhearted tale about two terribly wounded souls who survive by grudgingly leaning on each other's shoulder.

Inauguration 2013: Energy, environment take center stage in Obama speech

During his Inauguration 2013 address Monday, President Obama made a far-reaching case for energy innovation and environmental protection. His Inauguration 2013 speech echoed the views on energy and the environment that the president espoused in his first inaugural address.

In Mr. Obama's speech climate change was not far behind top-billed issues like the economic collapse, a decade of war, and the debate over health care. Roughly a thousand words in, Obama made a farsighted case for energy innovation, and?was unequivocal in positing environmental protection as a mandate set forth by the nation's founding fathers.

"We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity," Obama said. "We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations."

The president singled out climate-change skeptics, and critics who oppose investment of taxpayer dollars in private, clean-energy companies. ?

Is Flipping Houses Ethical? - Creative Real Estate Online

If you define flipping as buying a dilapidated property, completely renovating it, and then reselling it, then such a noble act as turning a neighborhood eyesore into a beautiful home is hardly an ethical question.

flipping

Flipping is legal, but is it ethical?

However, if you define flipping as getting properties under contract, and then?without ever making any improvements whatsoever, re-selling the property to another buyer, then an ethical issue exists that is rarely talked about or mentioned.

Usually, the more common question investors ask is, Is flipping houses illegal? As attorney Bill Bronchick explains in this article, it is not. Flipping houses is perfectly legal as long as there is no fraud involved.

There are plenty of actions out that are legal, but may be unethical. Law and ethics can be two very different things. So is flipping houses ethical?

What?s the Potential Ethical Issue with Flipping?

Sometimes the only reason flippers are able to get a property under contract for a very low price is because the owner doesn?t know any better or has an inaccurate understanding of what the value of their property really is.

Are you operating at the highest ethical level if you are getting a seller to agree to a very cheap price for their property when you know in your heart that they are unaware or misinformed as to the actual market value?

This is an ethical issue that exists below the surface of this business that investors should evaluate when embarking on flipping houses. The reality is that homeowners can simply call up a real estate agent, and if that agent markets the property on the MLS properly, most sellers can get in the ballpark of the market value for their property.

There is a reason why banks require that their REOs be listed on the MLS by a real estate agent. Banks want to get top dollar for their foreclosures!

There are two schools of thought, two sides to this issue.

Side # 1 ? A Deal Is a Deal

Some investors take the stance that, if the seller is happy with what I?ve offered, then a deal is a deal.

Certainly that is a valid point. Think of all those eBay entrepreneurs out there who buy items from Craigslist sellers and then turn around and sell for far more on eBay. Anyone internet savvy enough to post something to Craigslist could certainly have put it on eBay. What?s wrong with finding a Craigslist deal and selling it on eBay for more? A deal is a deal, right?

Therefore, how is it unethical if the seller is satisfied with the sales price you have negotiated with them? What does it matter if you sell it for more, if they got what they wanted?

Side # 2 ? Give the Seller Their Options

Other investors think, If I know that this seller could simply put this property on the MLS and make an extra $10,000 more than selling it to me, then I need to at least share the options the seller has, so that they can make an informed decision.

These two opposing views also bring forth practical issues to flipping that can be argued on both sides as well.

The drawback of not educating the seller of all of their options, such as putting the property on the MLS with an agent, is that after the contract is signed, they may begin asking friends and family about their decision. Soon the seller may realize, even before you?ve closed, that they are selling their property for far less than they should.

Their next move will be to try to get out of their contract with you by any means necessary (legal or otherwise). When people think someone is taking advantage of them (or they?re not getting their ?fair share?), they go to great lengths to get things straightened out.

Yet, by educating a seller on how they can possibly get more for their property than you are offering, you may lose the deal altogether.

Proponents of educating property owners of their options would argue that some sellers actually appreciate the information and still end up selling to you to avoid any future hassles dealing with real estate agents or showing the property. They would be far less likely to back out of the deal. Or, even if they decided to work with someone else, they might so appreciate your helpful advice that they refer other business to you.

Which side of the argument are you on? Please add your comments below and tell us: What?s your stance on the flipping ethical issue?

Web researchers buy from shops | Stuff.co.nz

Kiwi retailers can take heart from an international survey that found consumers like to research products online but buy in stores.

A PWC report, "Demystifying the online shopper: 10 myths of multichannel retailing" is based on a survey of more than 11,000 online shoppers in 11 countries about their shopping habits.

The survey found 17 per cent of online shoppers said they would not buy online at all and shop entirely in retail outlets.

Shoppers surveyed said in the coming 12 months they expected to shop in-store and online on a PC rather than on a tablet or smartphone.

Social media was found not to be a major "traffic driver" to online brands and retailers, and the personal computer still reigned over smartphones or tablets for online purchases, with 97 per cent of respondents saying they do their online shopping on a PC.

While neither New Zealand nor Australia was covered by the survey, PWC's Auckland-based technology partner Paul Brabin said our market is very similar to those surveyed including Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom and therefore our online shopping habits are too.

Brabin said many of the results were surprising, particularly that so many respondents still did their shopping in-store despite the rise of online sites.

In nine out of the 11 product categories surveyed including clothing, electrical and furniture the majority of consumers use physical stores for both research and purchasing.

Further, many consumers surveyed said they researched online but more preferred to buy products at a physical store.

Obama girls rock out with military kids at concert

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Usher sang "Yeah!" Katy Perry donned star and stripes for "Firework." And a ballroom full of lucky kids got to rock out with Sasha and Malia Obama at Saturday's Kids' Inaugural Concert, a star-studded event that honors America's military families.

"Now, inauguration is a pretty big deal," first lady Michelle Obama, who hosted the event along with Jill Biden, told the assembled families at the Washington Convention Center. "But I have to tell you that my very favorite part of this entire weekend is being right here with all of you." She paid tribute to the sacrifices that military families make, including their kids.

Pointing out that such kids often attend six to nine schools by the end of high school, always having to be "the new kid," she said being a military kid meant "growing up just a little faster, and working just a little harder than other kids." The concert was streamed live to several military bases around the country.

This was the second such concert for the Obama girls, and the choice of talent seemed to reflect the fact that they are four years older. While in 2009 they were entertained by Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, this time it was Usher and Perry, along with the groups Mindless Behavior and Far East Movement. Also performing were cast members from the Fox TV hit "Glee."

Usher, in black leather, kicked off the proceedings with his hit "Yeah!," followed by "Without You" and "OMG," earning a huge cheer from the crowd. In between acts, there were kid-friendly diversions like a dance-off, or a race among mascots of the Washington Nationals: oversized versions of presidents like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt.

Three members of the "Glee" cast were greeted warmly by the crowd: Naya Rivera, who plays Santana; Darren Criss, who plays Blaine; and Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes.

Nick Cannon emceed the evening, but it was Mrs. Obama, sporting her new bangs and wearing a white peplum shirt over black pants, who got to introduce the top attraction.

"It is now my pleasure to introduce the fabulous Katy Perry!" she said, and the singer emerged in what looked like a vintage swimsuit, covered patriotically with stars and stripes. She sang her hits "Teenage Dream," ''Part of Me," ''Wide Awake" and then "Firework," which was accompanied by a slide show of President Barack Obama: Obama in the Oval Office, Obama exiting Air Force One, Obama greeting LeBron James.

"I'm very proud to be here ... and to see the Obamas and the Bidens here for four more years," she said.

Perry was the favorite of concertgoer Dylan Garvin, 12, who came from Wilmington, Del. "I thought it was incredible," Dylan said of the concert. "It's a great way to celebrate."

Assad's overthrow "red line" for Iran: supreme leader's aide

DUBAI (Reuters) - A senior aide to Iran's supreme leader warned against the overthrow of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, saying his fate was a "red line", in one of the Islamic state's strongest messages of support for the Damascus government.

Iran has steadfastly backed Assad's rule since an uprising against his rule began almost two years ago and regards him as an important part of the axis of opposition against arch-foe Israel.

"If the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is toppled, the line of resistance in the face of Israel will be broken," Ali Akbar Velayati, who is seen as a potential contender in Iran's June presidential election, said in an interview broadcast on Sunday.

"We believe that there should be reforms emanating from the will of the Syrian people, but without resorting to violence and obtaining assistance from the (United States of) America," he told Lebanon's Al-Mayadeen satellite television.

Asked if Iran sees Assad as a red line, Velayati said: "Yes, it is so. But this does not mean that we ignore the Syrian people's right in choose its own rulers."

More than 60,000 people have died in the uprising against Assad, part of the Arab Spring protests that have swept aside four heads of state since 2011.

Iran, a regional Shi'ite Muslim power which backs Lebanon's Hezbollah group, describes many Syrian opposition groups as "terrorists" who are backed by Western and Arab states. Assad follows an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Velayati blamed what he called "reactionary" Arab states for the violence in Syria and singled out Qatar, accusing it of bringing in fighters from Somalia and Afghanistan to help topple Assad.

Velayati said all parties linked to the crisis in Syria needed to negotiate.

"Anyone who comes to the talks cannot negotiate on the table and support the armed elements, but must enter the negotiations and stop supporting the armed elements," he added.

The Islamic Republic has sought international backing for its six-point plan to resolve the Syrian conflict. The plan calls for an immediate end to violence and negotiations between all parties to form a transitional government, but does not call for Assad to step down.

Chefs hail first foodies with inauguration salute

(AP) ? Some of Washington's top chefs are coming together to salute the president ahead of the inauguration, in part because of the first family's influence on the culture around food.

Chicago-based Chef Art Smith is opening his Capitol Hill restaurant Art and Soul for a late-night Chefs Ball expected to attract food fans of all stripes Saturday night with its relatively low ticket price of $75. Seven celebrity chefs teamed up for the charity event to prepare delicious bites for a sold-out crowd of more than 500.

From the White House garden to Michelle Obama's focus on healthy eating, Smith said the Obamas, more than any other first family, have embraced fresh American food and care about where food comes from.

"Can that little garden at the White House feed America? No. But you know what it can do? It can inspire America," Smith said. "Most importantly, it's that we as Americans all deserve good food, regardless of economic, social differences."

Smith was Oprah Winfrey's personal chef for years and competed on TV's "Top Chef Masters."

For his first inaugural ball, Smith is cooking his trademark fried chicken. There would probably be a riot if he didn't, he said.

Guests are expected to include "Modern Family" actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Gayle King, co-anchor of "CBS This Morning" and Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn. The wait staff will wear white bow ties from Ferguson's organization TieTheKnot.org to promote gay marriage rights in Illinois and across the country.

Chefs will serve up dishes at stations around the restaurant. Smith is joined by Washington restaurateurs Erik Bruner-Yang of Toki Underground, Scott Drewno of The Source, Todd Gray of Equinox Restaurant, Rock Harper of TV's "Hell's Kitchen" who helps lead the charity D.C. Central Kitchen and Mike Isabella, a "Top Chef All-Stars" finalist whose restaurants include Graffiato and Bandolero.

Isabella said he was new to Washington four years ago and that the city's food scene has come of age in the Obama era. He plans to open another restaurant later this year.

"I think D.C. is probably one of the biggest and fastest-growing culinary scenes in America," Isabella said. "It was a steakhouse town 10 years ago. Nowadays it's all about living in the city and being a part of the growth."

In the 1980s, Smith said he visited the Reagan White House when it was party central. The Reagans loved entertaining, he said, but all the cooking was French.

"America had not really discovered or embraced its food to say 'We are America. We are about our food. We are about this wonderful melting pot of people who have all come together and created this amazing culture,'" Smith said.

In the past 20 years, tastes have changed. As first lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton embraced American cooking, and Laura Bush brought Tex-Mex to the White House, Smith said. The Obamas have gone a step further to foster more conversation about fresh ingredients.

Isabella, who joined Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's inaugural American Chefs Corps last year to use food as a tool for diplomacy, credits the Obama administration with changing attitudes around food.

"I think they're the first to really indulge into the whole culinary scene, putting chef programs together for schools and kids, dining in restaurants around the city and really believing in food and farm-to-table," he said. "It's been a huge, huge help for us."

Ordering the opposition out of the ring, Booker answered Del Rio?s call for a Spinaroonie, and with a reluctant jig from The Celtic Warrior, the party was officially underway.

Light switch inside brain: Laser controls individual nerve cells in mouse

Jan. 18, 2013 ? Activating and deactivating individual nerve cells in the brain is something many neuroscientists wish they could do, as it would help them to better understand how the brain works.

Scientists in Freiburg and Basel, Switzerland, have developed an implant that is able to genetically modify specific nerve cells, control them with light stimuli, and measure their electrical activity all at the same time. This novel 3-in-1 tool paves the way for completely new experiments in neurobiology, also at Freiburg's new Cluster of Excellence BrainLinks-BrainTools.

Birthe Rubehn and her colleagues from the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) and the Bernstein Center of the University of Freiburg as well as the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel describe the prototype of their implant in the journal Lab on a Chip. They report that initial experiments in which they implanted prototypes into mice were successful: The team was able to influence the activity of nerve cells in the brain in a controlled manner by means of laser light pulses.

The team used an innovative genetic technique that makes nerve cells change their activity by shining different colored lights on them. In optogenetics, genes from certain species of algae are inserted into the genome of another organism, for instance a mouse. The genes lead to the inclusion of light-sensitive pores for electrically charged particles into a nerve cell's membrane. These additional openings allow neuroscientists to control the cells' electrical activity.

However, only the new implant from Freiburg and Basel makes this principle actually practicable. The device, at its tip only a quarter of a millimeter wide and a tenth of a millimeter thick, was constructed on the basis of polymers, special plastics whose safety for implantation into the nervous system has been proven.

Unlike probes developed so far, it is capable of injecting substances necessary for genetic modification, emitting light for the stimulation of the nerve cells, and measuring the effect through various electrical contacts all at once. Besides optimizing the technique for production, the scientists want to develop a second version whose injection channel dissolves over time, reducing the implant's size even further.

Hunters kill 11 Burmese pythons in Florida hunt

Python Challenge 2013, aimed at culling South Florida?s population of invasive Burmese pythons and raising awareness about the hazards posed by non-native species, has claimed 11 snakes since its Saturday kickoff.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokeswoman Carli Segelson said she got the number from biologists from the University of Florida Research and Education Center, who check in the snakes turned over by hunters. Segelson said she did not have specific information about the sizes or locations of the animals harvested, nor the names of hunters.

More than 800 people from more than 30 states have registered to compete in the month-long challenge, which will award prize money for the most and largest pythons harvested.

?We?re very excited there have been 11 Burmese pythons turned in so far, since we didn?t have any expectations,? Segelson said Monday afternoon. ?But we are pleased we?ve had snakes turned in so early in the competition, especially with the weather being warm. This contest has gotten so much attention. We?re pleased we have been able to raise so much awareness about non-native species and their detrimental effects on the ecosystem.?

Hunters are restricted to four state wildlife management areas; Everglades National Park is off-limits. They may use some firearms, as well as captive bolts and machetes to kill pythons. Native species may not be taken.

Rapes, bombings drive half a million refugees out of Syria

The flood of refugees from Syria, driven by rampant bombings and the widespread use of rape as an instrument of terror, threatens to destabilize the Middle East.

Refugees fleeing Syria told the International Rescue Committee that they were leaving to escape the rampant rapes and the bombings that often leave children among the dead.

The Syrian government bombed areas around Damascus on Monday as part of its push to keep rebel fighters out of the capital, leaving many children among the dozens killed, anti-regime activists said.

An international aid organization cited such raids, along with rape and widespread destruction, as key factors in the exodus of more than a half-million Syrians to neighboring countries since the conflict began in March 2011.

The International Rescue Committee said it could be "months, if not years" before the refugees can return home and warned that Syria's civil war could enflame tensions in the Middle East.

After nearly two years of violence, it appears unlikely that the war will end soon. Although rebels seeking to oust President Bashar Assad have made gains in the country's north and east and outside of Damascus, they have yet to seriously challenge his hold on the capital or other parts of the country.

Earlier this month, Assad dismissed calls from the U.S. and others that he step down and vowed to keep fighting until the country is free of "terrorists" ? his government's shorthand for rebels.

International diplomacy has done little to bridge the gap.

In a report released Monday, the International Rescue Committee painted a grim picture of what life has become for Syrians in war-torn areas.

Syrians face brutal killings, arbitrary arrests, torture, frequent airstrikes, sexual violence and diminishing medical services, the report said.

The 32-page report, based on interviews with Syrian refugees in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and Iraq in November 2012, said that many who fled the country cited rape as a primary reason.

"Many women and girls relayed accounts of being attacked in public or in their homes, primarily by armed men," the report said. "These rapes, sometimes by multiple perpetrators, often occur in front of family members."

The group did not say if the alleged perpetrators were rebels or government forces.

Anti-regime activists have reported rapes by government soldiers or pro-government thugs, and U.N. war crimes investigators reported in August that government forces and allied militias were responsible for murders, rapes and indiscriminate attacks on civilians.

The report warned that violence could keep Syria's refugees in neighboring countries for years, taxing the resources of host governments and enflaming domestic tensions, particularly in Jordan and Lebanon. It called for greater international aid in and outside of Syria as well as open borders to allow those threatened by violence to escape.

Violence continued inside Syria on Monday, as government fighter jets carried out lethal airstrikes on rebellious areas near the capital, Damascus.

One strike hit the suburb of Moadamiyeh, blasting the walls off apartment blocks and scattering rubble in the streets. Activist videos posted online showed residents searching for survivors and wrapping dead bodies in blankets. One video showed two corpses lying face down, one covered in gray cement dust. Another showed the bodies of six children laid out on a floor. The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other Associated Press reporting.

Alleged tablet thief accidentally posts his picture on victim?s Facebook page

Another one added to the dumb criminals on the internet pile.

Every week, there?s a story about the dumbest criminals in the world getting themselves caught thanks to social media. But this one takes the cake with possibly the stupidest thing so far.

South Africa-based IOL News reports that James and Barbara McCall encountered a burglary in their house where their Samsung tablet went missing. Fair enough, but later on when the husband logged into Facebook to change his passwords, he found a picture of a stranger uploaded onto his wife?s Facebook account. A man that he believes is the burglar himself. Talk about failure of social media:

?He probably did not realize he was doing it. Usually you never log off from a tablet, so it could have happened quite quickly.?

Now that the picture has been handed over to the police, he?ll definitely wish it was Google Plus he would?ve opened instead.

Handy Tips On When You Should File For Bankruptcy | Rodt St

Sunday, January 13th, 2013. Author : Max Cohen. 8 views.

If your valuable items are facing repossession, it can leave you feeling anxious or fearful. Stop getting debt collector calls and figure out your finances by considering filing for personal bankruptcy. Take a few minutes to go over this article and make good use of the tips presented.

The first step to making your bankruptcy successful is to turn over a new leaf and decide to manage money better. Avoid running up current debts or taking on new debt just before filing for bankruptcy. When looking at your situation, a judge will take both your past and current credit history into consideration. Your most recent behavior should show that you realize the error of your ways and have changed course to become more fiscally responsible.

Speaking with others who have gone through bankruptcy can help you feel better about the process. It?s quite common for you to feel alienated and unable to connect with your friends while you?re dealing with the stress of a bankruptcy. On the Internet, however, you can share your struggles and ask for advice from people who have already been through bankruptcy.

Do not let bankruptcy consume you, make sure you make time for your friends and family. Filing for bankruptcy is a difficult process. This long and stressful process can leave a person feeling guilt ridden, unworthy and ashamed. Lots of people choose to disappear for a while until the entire process is over and done with. On the other hand, isolation of a self-imposed nature can only worsen your feelings, opening the door to mental depression to join your financial depression. It?s imperative that you spend as much time with loved ones as you can, even in the midst of your financial dilemma.

TIP! Some consumers filing for personal bankruptcy think they will struggle to get financing afterwards. This is partially true, but your score could be higher than it was before filing.

Safeguard your most valuable asset?your home. Filing for bankruptcy does not mean you have to lose your home. You might be able to keep your home, for instance, if you have two mortgages or if your home has lost its value. It can be worthwhile to understand the homestead exemption law to see if you qualify to keep living in your home under the financial threshold requirements.

Repayment Plans

There are many ways to resolve financial difficulties other than bankruptcy, and you should investigate all of them first. You may qualify for alternatives such as debt repayment plans or interest rate reductions. Ask your bankruptcy attorney about these options. Look into loan modification plans if you need to deal with an imminent foreclosure. The lender is able to help you in a number of ways, such as reducing interest rates, eliminating late charges, and even lengthening the loan, giving you more time to pay. Creditors want their money. Often, they are willing to work out repayment plans with you in order to get it.

Learn about the personal bankruptcy rules before petitioning. Your case may be rife with issues due to pitfalls inherent in codes regarding personal bankruptcy. If you commit severe mistakes, your bankruptcy could be dismissed. It is important to learn the bankruptcy code before filing bankruptcy. This will ensure your bankruptcy will go smoothly.

TIP! It can be difficult to obtain unsecured credit once you have filed for bankruptcy. In this event, you should attempt to apply for a secured card or two.

Filing bankruptcy under Chapter 7 does not mean all your debts are going to disappear. You may need to reaffirm certain secured debts. As a result, you must sign another agreement that says you?ll repay them. In addition, under certain circumstances, some debts can?t be discharged. For instance, you could not discharge child support obligations, court-sanctioned fines or even alimony payments through chapter 7.

In the event your bankruptcy case gets dismissed due to your own error, it is possible to re-file. Keep in mind that you will have automatic stay 30 days from when you file if you do have a case dismissed. If you need more than the allotted 30 days you should ask the judge for an extension if you have good cause.

Make sure to list all of the debts you are responsible for when you retain a lawyer to handle your bankruptcy case. No matter where the source of the debt comes from, you need to include it in your bankruptcy, or else it is still a debt you hold, even if it was a debt to another individual.

Be sure you know how Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 differ. All debt will be eliminated with Chapter 7. Your former ties with creditors will cease to exist. Bankruptcy under the rules of Chapter 13, on the other hand, require you to work out a payment arrangement to pay back the agreed upon amounts. It?s crucial that you know the differences between all of the various kinds of bankruptcies so that you may choose the best option for your situation.

TIP! Ensure that you bankruptcy is your best choice. Consolidating current debt could make it easier to manage.

Don?t wait till it?s too late to file for bankruptcy. What a lot of people do is ignore the fact that they are in a financial crisis and think that their debt is not going to catch up to them. Personal debts can spiral out of control very quickly, and if you don?t take care of them, you may find yourself facing foreclosure or wage garnishment. As soon as you know that you are too far over your head, make the move to call an attorney skilled in bankruptcy court, to weigh your options.

Be sure you?re doing what?s right before you file for bankruptcy. You can also avail yourself of other options, such as consumer credit counseling. If you file for bankruptcy, a mark is permanently left on your credit. Therefore, before you do this, you should utilize all the other options that you have.

Bankruptcy Process

If you have an attorney, select one that has years of experience with bankruptcy. There are many lawyers out there to choose from. You may be tempted to find the least expensive one in your area.

TIP! There is always the possibility that your petition for bankruptcy may be denied. It?s a good idea to keep this possibility in mind.

Don?t let shame consume you during the bankruptcy process. It is possible for those going through the bankruptcy process to feel unworthy, guilty or ashamed. Feelings such as these are not of value to you and it is possible for them to be psychologically harmful. Focusing on the positive during this stressful time is a good strategy for coping with your ordeal.

Don?t pay to for an initial consultation with a bankruptcy attorney, and thoroughly question each candidate. It is a good idea to consult several attorney before deciding on one. Make a decision when all your concerns and questions have been addressed well by one lawyer in particular. It?s isn?t necessary to make a choice right away. You could even go to different lawyers for advice.

Filing bankruptcy doesn?t mean that you won?t have any more bills to pay at all, so make sure that you?re always keeping up with the payments. Many people make a habit of making only the minimum payment because it is more comfortable; however, this habit can cause it to spiral out of control very quickly.

It is possible to get an auto loan or mortgage during the repayment period for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. It?s a bit more difficult, though. You will be required to meet a trustee and be approved for a new loan. Draft a personal budget to show that you will be able to repay your new loan. You should also be prepared to explain why you need to purchase the item.

TIP! Do your research before hiring a bankruptcy attorney. You do not want to hire someone who is new to the field of bankruptcy.

Scour your brain for any questions you can think of, then bring them to lawyers you consult with. Remember, an attorney?s time is costly. In order to save some money, be sure you have a list of questions written out in advance your meeting. Make sure you fully understand the entire bankruptcy process.

Even though bankruptcy is always a personal choice, do not file without checking out all other options. Also keep in mind many debt counselling companies are scams that can get you further into debt. Keep in mind the tips from this article, so that you can make smart financial decisions and prevent debt in the future.

(AP) ? The first days of the battle against Islamic extremists holding Mali's north have left at least 11 civilians dead, including three children who threw themselves into a river and drowned trying to avoid falling bombs, a presidential spokesman said Sunday as troops from Mali's neighbors are expected to join hundreds of French soldiers in the fight.

Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Nigeria agreed on Saturday to send soldiers, a day after France authorized airstrikes, dispatching fighter jets from neighboring Chad and bombing rebel positions north of Mopti, the last Malian-controlled town.

State television announced that the African troops, including as many as 500 each from Burkina Faso and Niger, are expected to begin arriving on Sunday. Britain has offered the use of its transport planes in order to help bring in the soldiers, according to a statement released by Prime Minister David Cameron's office in London.

The African soldiers will work alongside French special forces, including a contingent that arrived Saturday in Bamako in order to secure the capital against retaliatory attacks by the al-Qaida-linked rebel groups occupying Mali's northern half. National television broadcast footage of the French troops walking single-file out of the Bamako airport on Saturday, weapons strapped to their bodies or held over their shoulders.

Hundreds of Malians on Sunday also left the town of Lere for neighboring Mauritania, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) away, to escape the violence. Last year's initial fighting prompted hundreds of thousands of Malians to flee the north, displacing them or making them refugees in neighboring countries.

The military operation began Friday, after the fall of the town of Konna on Thursday to the al-Qaida-linked groups. Konna is only 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of the government's line of control, which begins at the town of Mopti, home to the largest concentration of Malian troops in the country.

The United Nations had cautioned that a military intervention needed to be properly planned, and outlined a step-by-step process that diplomats said would delay the operation until at least September of this year.

The rebels' decision to push south, and the swift fall of Konna, changed everything. After an appeal for help from Mali's president, French President Francois Hollande sent in the Mirage jets and combat helicopters, pounding rebel convoys and destroying a militant base. Footage of the jets provided to French television stations showed the triangle-shaped aircrafts screaming across the sky over northern Mali. French newspaper Le Monde reported that the jets dropped at least two, 250-kilogram (550-pound) bombs over militant targets.

The human toll has not yet been calculated, but a communique read on state television late Saturday said that at least 11 Malians were killed in Konna.

Sory Diakite, the mayor of Konna, says the dead included children who drowned after they threw themselves into a river in an effort to escape the bombardments.

"Others were killed inside their courtyards, or outside their homes. People were trying to flee to find refuge. Some drowned in the river. At least three children threw themselves in the river. They were trying to swim to the other side. And there has been significant infrastructure damage," said the mayor, who fled the town with his family and is now in Bamako.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Sunday that France now has more than 400 troops in Bamako, mainly to ensure the safety of French citizens and also to send a signal to the extremists.

"We will strengthen our operation depending on the situation," he said on a political talk show with itele and Europe 1 radio. Le Drian said that Rafale fighter jets will be part of the operation and that technical support will be arriving in the hours ahead.

He said that France has international support and "the Americans seconded us" with intelligence and logistical support, though he did not elaborate.

Storage hangars and "sensitive sites" were among targets destroyed so far and the Islamists lost a "significant number" in the fighting, Le Drian said. "The intervention is still in progress and we will continue" as long as needed.

Human rights groups have warned that any military intervention will exact a humanitarian price. As Mali and the international community took time to prepare for intervention in the north, the rebels affiliated with al-Qaida were able to dig into the terrain, and prepare for war. The rebels occupied Mali's northern half, an area larger than Afghanistan, in the chaos following a coup in Mali's capital last March.

With no clear leader at the head of the country, Mali's military simply gave up when the rebels arrived, retreating hundreds of miles to the south without a fight. In the nine months since then, the extremists have imposed their austere and severe form Islam, and those who disobey their rules are beaten with whips and camel switches. Public amputations of the hands of thieves have become a regular spectacle.

They have also used their nine-month siege of the north to dig into the landscape, creating elaborate defenses, including tunnels and ramparts using the construction equipment abandoned by fleeing construction crews.

In addition to the civilians, a French pilot was killed after the Islamists downed his combat helicopter, in a sign of how dangerous the terrain has become even for trained, special forces.

Flipboard on a Nexus 10
