DELICATESSEN / RESTAURANT

RUOMS ? ARD?CHE

It?s always fascinating to see how clever people rise above economic crises and thrive. The bright Ruoms shop opened by Sandrine Herrera in 2002 focused on home interiors for seven years. Then, figuring that customers were probably more interested in decent food and drink than fancy d?co fripperies, she extended it to include deli products and a restaurant.

?I was inspired by the boutiques of Uz?s,? she says ? somewhat mystifyingly: L?Atelier des D?fil?s has more space and a better local product mix than anywhere Uz?s has yet come up with, as far as I can tell. (Maybe she will inspire some entrepreneur there?).

As the restaurant was closed on the Wednesday I dropped by, I can?t say much about that ? except to mention that it has a selection of tapas-style dishes with a local twist; charcuterie plates (or, more precisely, slates); robust main courses and a worthwhile list of local wines.

What I can tell you is that the shop is first-rate. A true showcase for Ard?che products, it has all sorts of saucissons, goat?s cheeses, juices and honeys from nearby suppliers, as well as the two most popular requests: cr?me de marrons (made from Ard?che chestnuts, of course) and local jams. Terrines come from Le Plateau Ard?chois; beers from Les Chopes du Moulin and Bourganel; and there?s a creditable selection of wines from small producers.

A useful address for provisioning around Christmas ? or any old time.
