Cain Velasquez reclaims UFC heavyweight title

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Cain Velasquez waited 13 miserable months for the chance to put the UFC heavyweight belt back around his waist.

When he finally got Junior Dos Santos back in the cage, Cain didn't waste another minute.

Velasquez reclaimed the UFC heavyweight title Saturday night, thoroughly battering Dos Santos on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision in UFC 155.

Velasquez (11-1) took early control of the rematch of his only career loss, flooring the Brazilian champion with a big right hand midway through the first round. Velasquez spent most of the match stalking and pounding on Dos Santos (15-2), who never fully recovered from the first-round shot that left him swollen and woozy.

"I was so tired, but I had to endure," Velasquez said. "My coaches and everybody helped me so much. He's tough, too. ... It feels so good to get this. This is my wife's Christmas present. I promised her I would do this."

Velasquez won every round on every judge's scorecard in the UFC's traditional year-end event in its hometown. The three judges scored the bout for Velasquez 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43. The Associated Press also favored Velasquez 50-44, giving a 10-8 advantage to Velasquez in the first round.

Dos Santos took the UFC belt away from Velasquez in November 2011 in just 64 seconds, earning a first-round stoppage victory with one vicious overhand right in Anaheim, Calif. Velasquez refused to blame a knee injury for his only defeat ? but in the rematch, he demonstrated exactly what he can do at full strength.

"I knew that Junior was a tough striker and he was able to end our last fight that way, so I was prepared for him this time," Velasquez said. "I was able to effectively use my striking and my grappling to control him throughout the fight and get the title back."

Jim Miller won a narrow unanimous decision over Joe Lauzon in a sensationally bloody fight on the undercard, and rising middleweight Costa Philippou stopped Tim Boetsch in the third rounds. Yushin Okami grappled his way past Alan Belcher and Derek Brunson easily beat veteran Chris Leben.

But 12,423 fans bought a record $3.2 million in tickets at the MGM Grand Garden to see the second meeting in what seems certain to be a memorable heavyweight trilogy ? although UFC President Dana White said Velasquez is likely to fight again, probably against Alistair Overeem, while Dos Santos heals.

"I don't know if you saw (Dos Santos) after the fight, but he looked terrible," White said. "It's going to be a while until he starts training again."

Dos Santos' loss was his first in the UFC in 10 fights with mixed martial arts' dominant promotion, and his first defeat anywhere since November 2007. Dos Santos expected the rematch to last longer, but also predicted a second knockout.

Instead, Dos Santos barely avoided getting stopped in the first round, and he headed straight to a hospital after the bout with what White thought was a broken jaw.

"His game was very effective, and tonight he was better than me," Dos Santos said. "It's not usual for me to take a punch, but he walks forward all the time. His takedowns, his grappler game is very effective, so congratulations for him."

Velasquez immediately showed the rematch would bear little resemblance to the first fight, pursuing Dos Santos from the opening bell and quickly backing up the champion. Velasquez then floored Dos Santos with that huge right to the head midway through the round, and Dos Santos had to cover up in the corner while barely surviving an onslaught of strikes and ground-and-pound.

After brusquely swatting aside his stool and choosing to stand in his corner between rounds, Velasquez went to work on the ground in the second, and the former Arizona State wrestler repeatedly got the boxing specialist into bad positions.

Dos Santos struggled to regain his rhythm, and Velasquez managed another takedown early in the third round before repeatedly tagging the champion with shots that left his face discolored and puffy.

At the final bell, Velasquez collapsed on his back at the center of the cage, pointing skyward with both hands. Although Overeem is tops among several heavyweights who would like a title shot, a third bout between Velasquez and Dos Santos can't be too far away.

"Cain Velasquez, like you said (last year), I'm going to come back and I'm going to take my belt again," Dos Santos said.

Dos Santos' win over Velasquez last year in the UFC's first fight on American network television catapulted the hard-punching Brazilian heavyweight into an international spotlight. Both fighters injured their knees in the month leading up to their first fight, but stayed in the bout because of its importance.

Dos Santos defended his title against Frank Mir earlier this year and got a lucrative sponsorship deal with Nike while emerging as one of the promotion's most likable stars.

Miller and Lauzon also turned in one of the UFC's best fights of 2012 in its final show, starting when Miller opened a gaping gash over Lauzon's right eye early in the first round. Blood gushed out of Lauzon's face and onto the canvas, yet he blinked it away and survived the round to a standing ovation.

Lauzon bled substantially for the final two rounds, yet traded big shots with Miller and even took down his fellow veteran, although submission holds were nearly impossible due to the blood slickening both fighters' bodies. Miller narrowly avoided two submission attempts by Lauzon in the final seconds before celebrating his second win in four fights.

"Joe Lauzon is a tough kid," Miller said. "I knew I was going to have to bring my best effort to put him away and I was never able to. That's how good he is on the ground. And even in the last minute, look what he was trying to do to win the fight."

After two dull main-card bouts resulted in wins for Okami and Brunson, Philippou (12-2) and Boetsch entertained the crowd ? but Boetsch (16-5) left his first loss in two years with big cuts on his forehead and nose along with an apparently injured hand. Philippou was impressive in his fifth straight victory, winning as a fairly late replacement for Chris Weidman, his training partner.

In the early fights, veteran Jamie Varner (21-7-1) continued his comeback with a split-decision victory over Melvin Guillard (47-13-3), and heavyweight Todd Duffee (9-2) returned to the UFC after an acrimonious 2?-year absence with a nasty first-round knockout victory over Phil De Fries.

Delhi Gang-Rape Victim Dies; India Awash In Grief

On Saturday morning, a 23-year-old Delhi woman died in a Singapore hospital (where she had been airlifted to on Thursday) from grave injuries suffered during a brutal hour-long sexual assault by at least four men on a private bus in Delhi.

The young woman?s ordeal has seemingly inspired a massive amount of self-reflection in India with respect to how women and girls are treated.

Now, the protesters who have vociferously condemned the police and courts of law for their inaction have turned to mourning the passing of the girl most of them never knew.

Press Trust of India reported that massive memorials for the victim were held in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore and other parts of the vast country. Many were dressed in black and had their mouths covered with tape in a silent protest.

These demonstrations were largely peaceful, unlike last week?s orgies of rage and anguish, marked by violent clashes with teargas-firing police.

Still, this tragic incident ? one of untold hundreds of thousands of sexual assaults that occur in India every year ? may lead to political and social upheavals.

Shabana Azmi, an actress turned activist, vowed: ?We cannot let the anger pass. It will be a greater betrayal. We have to do some soul searching.?

Indeed, six men arrested in connection with the gang-rape have had their criminal charges upgraded to murder, while many women?s rights activists are demanding the death penalty in such cases,

India's Home Affairs minister, Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh promised swift action against the rapists.

"I can only assure the family [of the victim] that the government will take whatever steps are needed to ensure that her killers get the harshest punishment in the quickest of time," he said.

"The government will work overtime to try and bring about laws and steps that will ensure that no other person, no other citizen of this country, has to go through or undergo the same kind of trauma."

Delhi students plan to hold a vigil at the location in south Delhi where the girl was attacked to call for tougher punishment for sex offenders.

But some parts of the capital are in a security lockdown to prevent the resurgence of violence.

?The government is not even allowing mourning of the death. This is insensitivity. There is complete lock down. You have the metro stations shut. You have a road completely blocked. This is undemocratic,? a protester complained to PTI.

BBC reported that in response to promises from lawmakers that the government will get tough on rapists, one Delhi protester held up a sign which read: "We don't want your condolences! We don't want your fake sentiments! We demand immediate action to strengthen the laws against sexual violence."

Meanwhile, the victim will be flown back to India for a private funeral.

Coach cleared of child porn wants files sealed

(AP) ? Minnesota State University, Mankato, head football coach Todd Hoffner, who was cleared of child pornography charges last month that stemmed from videos found on his cellphone of his naked children clowning around after a bath, is suing to keep the police investigative reports sealed.

Hoffner has been taken off administrative leave, but he hasn't been reinstated as head coach and is facing a 20-day, unpaid school suspension in January for unspecified reasons. He sued the state and Blue Earth County earlier this month in an effort to keep the police reports private, after a Twin Cities television station asked to see them. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order that would keep anyone from disseminating the investigative file.

District Court Judge Krista Jass ruled last week that the reports will remain private until they can be reviewed, the Mankato Free Press reported (http://bit.ly/ZFYA0c ),

Jass ordered prosecutors to gather all investigative reports and turn them over to Hoffner's attorney, Jim Fleming. He'll be allowed to file a sealed list of information that he believes should be kept from the public. After receiving Fleming's list, Jass will decide what should remain sealed.

Fleming said in a court affidavit that releasing the information would harm Hoffner.

"Plaintiff Mr. Hoffner has an ongoing investigation relative to his employment as a head football coach at (MSU)," Fleming's affidavit said. "Release of private non-public data could irreparably harm (Hoffner) with respect to that investigation that a civil lawsuit for damages would not fully compensate."

Hoffner was charged with child porn possession in August after school officials found videos of his naked children on his work-issued cellphone, which he had turned in to be repaired. Jass dismissed the criminal charges last month after concluding that the short videos of his children acting silly after a bath were not child porn and showed nothing illegal.

Last week, the university said it was suspending Hoffner without pay for 20 days starting Jan. 7. In its announcement, the university didn't say why it was suspending Hoffner, and school officials have declined to specify the reason.

An attorney for the union representing Hoffner has said the suspension is being challenged. The university also said last week it is still investigating a complaint against Hoffner.

Fleming told the newspaper that he wants the information sealed to protect Hoffner's privacy. Investigators went through computer files and took pictures of items in his house.

"We're not hiding anything from anybody," Fleming said.

(AP) ? All Cincinnati Bearcats quarterback Brendon Kay wanted was one more chance.

He got it thanks to Cincinnati's defense.

The Bearcats forced Josh Snead's fumble at the Cincinnati 5 with 1:20 left and Kay threw an 83-yard touchdown pass to tight end Travis Kelce with 44 seconds to go, lifting Cincinnati and interim coach Steve Stripling to an improbable 48-34 win over the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday night.

"We were figuring we might get one more shot as an offense and when we got the fumble we looked at each other and said we've worked way too hard to quit now," Kay said.

Kay, who set a Belk Bowl record with four touchdown passes and was named the game's MVP, called it a "huge win" given the adversity the Bearcats faced after losing coach Butch Jones and their two coordinators three weeks ago.

"It's really been chaos for the last month ... pure chaos," Kay said. "We've played it off as it hasn't been, but it was pure chaos from the time we found out (Jones) he was leaving."

Almost as chaotic as their latest win.

It looked as though the Bearcats were about done when Duke was deep in their territory and looking for the go-ahead score with 1:20 left in the game.

But Snead fumbled and Kay capitalized with his go-ahead pass to Kelce. Nick Temple capped the wild finish with a 55-yard interception return with 14 seconds left.

Kay quickly took advantage of the change in momentum after the Snead fumble, finding Kelce down the middle on a seam route. Kelce got behind the Duke defense and caught the ball in stride, racing the final 60 yards to the end zone as Blue Devils fans looked on in stunned silence.

It was a play called Left Texas 60, Y Go Burst, with three receivers running seam routes.

"I threw the ball and I was just hoping he would turn and look," Kay said. "He wasn't looking until the last second and it worked out great."

Kay also threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ralph David Abernathy, and 25-yard scoring strikes to Anthony McClung and Chris Moore. George Winn also ran for a 46-yard touchdown for Cincinnati.

"I felt like a point guard dishing out the ball," Kay said. "The guys were making plays."

Cincinnati (10-3) finished with its fifth 10-win season in six years.

"That was one of our goals," Stripling said.

Duke quarterback Sean Renfree threw for 358 yards ? another Belk Bowl record ? for the Blue Devils (6-7), who were seeking their first bowl win since 1961. Conner Vernon, the ACC's all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, had 10 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown in his final game for the Blue Devils.

But the big play for Duke was Snead's fumble.

"It's heartbreaking because we wanted to win this game for our seniors," Snead said. "But as a team, we're going to learn from this and build off the momentum from this. I've got great teammates. They encouraged me to keep my head up. If you have a little adversity, you've got to face it."

Duke coach David Cutcliffe said the loss was tough to swallow.

"This feeling in our guts is not very good right now," he said. "But we're going to move forward with this. The biggest insult we can give our seniors is to not move forward from this and we will do this."

Duke, which came in having allowed 51 points and an average of 294.5 yards rushing over its previous four games, struggled to stop Cincinnati after the first quarter.

The Bearcats piled up 554 total yards of offense, including 130 yards on the ground by Winn. Duke wasn't too shabby on offense, either, combining with the Bearcats for a Belk Bowl-record 1,114 yards.

Cincinnati trailed 16-0 before rattling off 27 straight points to seemingly take control, and the big turning point came courtesy of linebacker Greg Blair.

With Duke leading 16-3 and looking for more, Renfree fired a pass over the middle for running back Jela Duncan, who lunged for the goal line but was hit by Blair and fumbled. Blair recovered and suddenly the Bearcats had a shot.

"That seemed to fire us up on the sidelines," Blair said. "It gave us some life."

A short time later, Kay connected with McClung to cut the Duke lead to 16-10. Kay's second scoring pass to Abernathy capped a 98-yard drive in the final two minutes of the first half and gave the Bearcats their first lead.

NOTES: Duke punter Will Monday set a Belk Bowl record with a 79-yard punt. ... The two teams set a combined record for most first downs in the Belk Bowl.

White House urges dockworkers, shippers deal

(AP) ? The White House is urging dockworkers and shipping companies to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension for East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers whose existing pact expires this week.

Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich says the White House is monitoring the situation closely and urges the parties to "continue their work at the negotiating table to get a deal done as quickly as possible."

Talks between the dockworkers and shipping companies broke down Dec. 18 amid unresolved issues such as wages and container royalties ? the payments to union workers based on cargo weight. The International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance are expected to meet this week.

The National Retail Federation has asked the Obama administration to use "all means necessary" to prevent a strike.

750,000 Android apps invade OS X thanks to BlueStacks App Player

BlueStacks App Player OS XBlueStacks App Player

Earlier this year, BlueStacks App Player made headlines by allowing?Android apps run on Microsoft?s (MSFT) Windows 8?platform. The company announced on Thursday its App Player is now available in beta form for free on Mac, giving OS X users access to 750,000 Android apps normally reserved for smartphones and tablets.

[More from BGR: Google names 12 best Android apps of 2012]

BlueStacks uses patent-pending virtualization software called ?Layercake? to allow Android apps to run on other platforms. It works virtually the same as running Windows within OS X using software such as Parallels or VMWare. The Windows 8 version of BlueStacks has been out since March and has been installed on more than 5 million PCs, which is a good sign that people want to run mobile apps on their computers.

[More from BGR: Samsung looks to address its biggest weakness in 2013]

BGR tested BlueStacks on a mid-2011 MacBook Air running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and found performance to be hit or miss. Android apps can be searched and it will list which app stores to download them from, but sometimes apps won?t install properly because of missing code, especially from the Google Play store.?Downloading apps from the Amazon (AMZN) Appstore seems to be a better bet, though. If it?s any consolation,?Jetpack Joyride?and Fruit Ninja?are perfectly playable.

BlueStacks works as mostly advertised, but honestly, why bother running Android apps on your Mac? A mouse or trackpad isn?t a better substitute for a touchscreen. But if you must do so, it?s reassuring to know BlueStacks is available.

Setting goals for 2013 | Dan Hawkins Leadership

IMG_1909It?s that time of year again. People rush to join health clubs, open savings accounts, buy Nicotine gum, and a whole host of activities intended to improve themselves, break the habit, turn the corner, clear the hurdles, and get the proverbial monkeys off their backs. In some ways this frenzy of good intentions is a bit humorous, tied to the start of the new year and all. Why is it that January 1st evokes such a wave of well meaning misfires? Why not July 1st, or September 28th? Why not every day?

I offer the theory that there is nothing special about January 1st itself, rather, it merely serves as a good place to play such a game because we like deadlines, love milestones, and look to build the drama of everyday events into something bigger and therefore more meaningful. We love the idea that we are actually going to take responsibility for outcomes and actually force ourselves to change ? this time. Tradition also has its pull; we are convinced that because ?everyone else is doing it? or ?people have always done it,? we should be participating too.

Maybe it?s unavoidable, this gravitational pull toward New Year?s Resolutions. So why fight it? Perhaps the best course of action (and I can hardly believe I?m writing the words) is to line up with everyone else and set some 2013 goals for ourselves. After all, Rascals are all about growing and improving, and maybe it?s just that this time of year is the one time when the crowd lines up with us.

So how can we set goals that won?t disappear faster than a politician?s promise? First, let?s cover the basics, which are given more depth of treatment in?Orrin Woodward?and my book,Launching a Leadership Revolution.?

1. Goals must be specific

2. Goals must be written down

3. Goals must be set in stone

4. Goals must be measurable

5. Goals must be realistic

6. Goals must provide motivation

7. Goals must be in line with priorities and values

8. Goals must be prominent

9. Goals must have a specific time period

And now for some subtle nuances that will help make your 2013 goals more achievable:

1. Don?t set too many goals. Sometimes we can overwhelm ourselves with too many things on which to focus at once. We want to loose weight, build muscle, stop a bad habit, improve in this area, move ahead in that. We take a look at ourselves and see so many areas for improvement that we are tempted to attack them all at once. Resist this temptation. Select one (or at the most two), and hammer away at it with all your ability. Focus is the key.

2. Take immediate action. Goals are actually quite easy to set; the process is painless, quick, and costs nothing. Where the fins hit the water is when we take action toward their fulfillment. Action convinces our subconscious minds that we are serious. It begins patterns that can form into productive habits. So allow no time to lapse between the setting of a goal and the first steps toward its attainment. Remember: time kills all deals, and this includes deals you make with yourself. So get moving, and do it immediately.

3. Set rewards and correspondingly deny yourself. One of the most effective methods for gaining leverage over ourselves is to set up a reward system that encourages correct and discourages incorrect behavior. (Also, it should go without saying that such a reward/denial system should align with the goals set.) For instance, let?s say your goal is to lose that last 15 pounds. An action plan might involve joining a health club, working out three to four times a week, and managing your caloric intake. So far so good. The reward system might look like this: DENY yourself any baked goods whatsoever until Sunday, at which time, if and only if you were successful throughout the week, you REWARD yourself with a treat. Now, I am not a weight management specialist. Perhaps this is a stupid idea physiologically. I don?t know (and I don?t care). The point is that self-denial can be used to encourage correct actions, which are then rewarded in small but non-destructive ways.

4. Align your environment. Changing things in our inward lives almost always requires making changes in our outward lives. Much of the time our environment, if not entirely responsible, is at least an accomplice in who we are, what we do, and how we behave. If you hang out with a bunch of people doing a certain activity and yet you?ve vowed to refrain from that activity, guess what? Your association with those people is going to have to come to an end, at least in large part. If you?re trying to lose weight but you hold your daily company lunches at Krispy Kreme?s, you might want to rethink your geographical tendencies. You get the idea.

5. Track progress. We need encouragement like a newspaper needs crises. One of the best ways to encourage a correct behavior in ourselves is to track and take note of progress, no matter how miniscule. Seeing improvement, noticing some advancement, are fuel in the tanks of self-improvement and change.

6. Keep the big picture in mind. Most of our worthy goals are anchored to our ideals. Our new goal fits some higher picture we hold of ourselves and some loftier concept we?d like to make reality. Keep this in mind. View it continually and remember the deepest reasons for setting the goal in the first place. Remember: it?s hard to get down when you?re constantly looking up.

So those are the guidelines and the nuances for goal setting. At a time of year when everyone seems aligned to better themselves in one way or another, there is no shame in joining the crowd (just don?t get used to it). Sadly, though, you won?t be with the crowd for long. They?ll fall by the wayside like the wimpy kids at football tryouts. They?ll?set?their goals and thensit?their goals. They?ll set high expectations and then sit down in the dumps. But not you. Now you are armed and dangerous. You?ve been given all you need to not only properly set a goal, but to hit it as well. I?ll see you at the health club.

Turkish ex-president's son wants autopsy report made public

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The full report of an autopsy on late President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s, should be released for public scrutiny, the former leader's son said on Wednesday.

Ozal's body was recently exhumed after years of rumors that was murdered by militants of the "deep state" - a shadowy group within the Turkish establishment of the day. He had angered some with his efforts to end a Kurdish insurgency and survived an assassination bid in 1988.

The body of Ozal, who died of heart failure in 1993 aged 65, was exhumed in October on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play.

But the summary this month of the forensic medicine institute report said the exact cause of death could not be determined because no autopsy was conducted immediately after Ozal died.

The former president's son, Ahmet Ozal, who like other members of his family believes his father may have been poisoned, wants the full scientific autopsy report published.

"The scientific findings ... should not be disclosed only to the council of forensic medicine but also to universities so specialists and professors can also evaluate the results," Ahmet Ozal, a former lawmaker, told reporters.

He said he would also file legal cases against people involved in organizing his father's removal to hospital on the day of his death once a full report by the state inspection committee was released. So far only parts of the report have been released to the public.

Ozal, the eighth president of the Turkish Republic, died in an Ankara hospital while still in office.

Viewed as helping to shape modern Turkey with free market economic policies, Ozal also supported the U.S.-led coalition which expelled Iraq from Kuwait in 1991.

After a period of military rule following a 1980 coup, Ozal dominated Turkish politics as prime minister from 1983-89 and parliament then elected him president.

While prime minister, Ozal was shot by a right-wing gunman in 1988 at a party congress, but survived with a wounded finger.

After a triple heart bypass operation in the United States in 1987, he kept up a grueling schedule and remained overweight until he died.

Ankara prosecutors are continuing their investigation into Ozal's death and state prosecutors elsewhere have started investigating the deaths of other public figures from the 1990s.

Turkish political history is littered with military coups, alleged anti-government plots and extra-judicial killings. A Turkish court is trying hundreds of people suspected of links to a nationalist underground network known as "Ergenekon" accused of plotting to overthrow the current government.

Engadget's CES 2013 Preview: Household

With CES looming like an electrically charged storm of news and announcements, it's time for us to give you our best bets on what you'll see come January. During the month of December, we'll bring you a series of CES preview posts, forecasting what you can expect when the news deluge begins. For more of what's to come, check out our hub.

Engadget's CES 2013 preview Household

Last year, we saw the likes of Motorola, LG and Samsung continue to demonstrate their technical skills on washing machines, fridges, home automation and even cars. While some Engadget editors struggled to see even half the appeal of those WiFi-connected washing machines at CES 2012, Motorola's Connected Home gateway showed a realistic vision of how a wireless home should work, with its gateway router tying your Android devices to your thermostat, security system and lighting. However, we haven't heard much since January from Motorola when it comes to its household system, so it wouldn't surprise us if the Google-owned manufacturer has a refreshed, possibly deeper system to show us this time. But what else will the middle of Nevada have to offer the forward-looking homemaker in the next year? We have more ideas after the break.

Security Loophole In Facebook?s Camera App Allowed Hackers To Hijack Accounts Over WiFi [Confirmed]

Screen Shot 2012-12-24 at 10.55.10 AMPSA to all Facebook Camera users on iOS: If you haven’t update you app in the past few days, update?it now. The older version of the app, pre-1.1.2 and released before December 21, has a?security loophole. When used over WiFi networks, malicious hackers can tap the network and hijack Camera users’ accounts, picking up information like email addresses and passwords in the process. The white-hat hacker who ID’d the problem is Mohamed Ramadan, an Egypt-based security researcher and trainer with Attack-Secure?who has also found and reported vulnerabilities for Apple, Google, and Etsy — which apparently also had the same loophole in its iOS app. Ramadan tells us that the issue lied in the Camera app’s Secure Sockets Layer certification, which was too open. As he puts it, “The problem is the app accepts any SSL certification from any source, even evil SSL certifications and this enables any attacker to perform Man in The Middle Attack against anyone uses Facebook Camera App for IPhone. This means that the application doesn?t warn the user if someone in the same [WiFi network] trying to hijack his Facebook account.” Testing his theory by using a proxy to listen in on a WiFi network, he was able to type in his username and password into the Camera app, and then see that information appear via the proxy. Ramadan notes that he’s tested all Facebook apps and the rest appear to protect from this similar vulnerability. We’ve reached out to Facebook for comment but haven’t received a response. [Update: Facebook has confirmed Ramadan's bug discovery, which it addresses in the 1.1.2 version.]

Help me with life

I am a senior in high school this year. I will be going off to college next year, and up until I started riding motorcycles last year it has always been computer engineering that I wanted to go into. It's still a VERY viable option, but I'm increasingly becoming interested in trying to find some sort of engineering that could correlate in some way to motorcycles/auto. The best moments in life happened on my motorcycle in the last year, and if a job is viable I feel that could be the best way to go for me to be happy working for the rest of my life.

I'm not quite sure what jobs, besides mechanic, are really viable with motorcycles.

So, my question: What careers have you guys heard of, experienced, known, etc. etc. that relate to motorcycles in the engineering field? Or dealing with motorcycles? The closest things you know of?

Motorcycles are generally a hobby, not a career option (unless you are Dani Pedrosa) and unless you are a high level engineer or specialized mechanic the money is probably not going to be that great. Go for a high level engineering degree in a field that interests you to get a good paying career started, then buy all kinds of motorcycles and tinker around or do track days in your spare time. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thanks!

Trust me, I understand that motorcycles are mostly a hobby. But in my mind, there's also the people that make that hobby happen.

I'm quite aware that it's a long-shot, but I'm just trying to find if there's any even distant-related auto-related jobs that are plausible to try to get into. Computer engineering is still my #1 choice, I've stuck with programming since I was 9, but you can never have too many options!

I had a friend that went to MMI and become a well trained mechanic. After a few years him and a buddy left the dealerships they were at and opened their own shop. They were doing really well with steady business. But eventually he got burnt out and decided to enlist in the army. They closed up shop and I asked him why and he said the money was good but turning your hobby into your career kind of takes the fun out of it.

I understand that your planning on a higher level than he was at but it may still fit. I'd think your best bet would be try to get ahold of some manufactures of bikes and components. In Ohio your going to be limited to Honda (they don't build bikes here but sometimes test them near Marysville), Showa, or Harley if you travel. I can't think of anyone else off hand. Maybe look into R+D there's a place beside the Honda plant called TRC that does all sorts of testing but most of the engineers there work for Honda. You could get into tires those are always changing but the closest would be Goodyear and they aren't really known for motorcycle tires. You could contact Don Guhl of Guhl motorsports, he is the go to guy for getting the computer on your bike reflashed. They do a lot of performance stuff there and are a small enough shop that you can probably get in and talk to them about your career choice and how to go about it. They are in Pennsylvania somewhere.

About a month ago someone started a thread about this same exact topic you may want to dig that up so people don't have to repeat what they said in there.

Ill tell you what I always told my brother, what your career comes down to is this, you are selling your time. Get a good education so you can sell it to the highest bidder. No matter what interest you pursue in life it wil eventually become just a job that you do for money.

Of course, my brother didn't listen to me, went to school for police science and works for a box store.

Yup mechanical. I had my heart set on designing cars boats and roller coasters up until my freshmen year of college when I was way too bored and lazy in Engineering and realized how remotely small of a shot it was to do what I really wanted

My primary interest in high school was automobiles. I was in college prep but the guys in the auto mechanics tech program would bring their cars to me to tune (this was in the early seventies when emissions controls were new & absolutely ruined the performance of cars.) Everyone was always saying, "Why don't you become a mechanical engineer since you love cars so much?" My reason was I didn't want to ruin my passion by making it my job. I knew that VERY FEW jobs are really something enjoyable, but are a means to an end. I decided I wanted to do something that would allow me to make enough money to enjoy my hobby (cars, then later motorcycles) and still be a job that I at least wouldn't hate to do the rest of my life. You will find out that there is NO job that ends up being what you think it is and no matter what, you'll have good and bad days. So, what did I decide to become? An optometrist! In no way related to cars/bikes but a career wih good hours, good working conditions and good pay. I've been successfully self employed for 30 years, raised a family, and played with a number of cool bikes & cars over the past 30+ years.

Can Ethical be Practical ? Calmconfidentme | PRLog

?

?

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 24, 2012 - The philosophy is free but we charge for the skills.

Can you remember being told not to lie as a child but then getting into trouble for telling the truth? We are told absolutely to tell the truth then friends ask us questions where a truthful answer would hurt so we soften our reply with a white lie. The reality is inflexible rules don?t work and our whole society is built on inflexible, absolute commandments. Absolutes are the shoulds and musts of black and white thinking. All or nothing or, black and white thinking tells us homosexuality is an abomination and sinners burn for all eternity. In the real world people do fall out of love, do bend the truth, have different sexual preferences and we do send soldiers to war to kill other people. Saying absolutely that you are not allowed to do so is unrealistic and a cause for mental anguish that can sometimes turn into illness and much of which is avoidable. What we need is a new realistic philosophy that matches our real world but is still ethical. I call this the Cirf. The Cirf is a world philosophy that solves the failure of absolute belief systems with the solution of ethical preferences in a consequence framework.

The solution is based on the lessons of therapy and the world of ideas. Consequence frameworks that use preferences don?t make unrealistic demands on our humanness. For example we say we should lose weight by exercising then when we slip back into our old habits we beat ourselves up and often stress eat or drink making things worse. But preferences allow us to be human and work towards realistic goals, even weight goals without stressing ourselves. Absolutes stress us out because they often make impossible demands however thinking in preferences automatically reduces our stress.

In the Cirf belief system we believe ideas are powerful in themselves and can be fitted into a philosophical framework. Most of the ideas come from Cognitive Therapy with one exception. Therapy teaches rationality, the Cirf is a consequence framework, which is both rational and irrational. It uses a consequence framework to help us make preferred choices, monitor and measure our progress as human beings. Some of those choices are rational but others are not. Choices of the heart are often irrational, rationality will often deny heart choices but the Cirf embraces all as a rainbow of choices that we select from based on consequence.

The key idea is that how we think, is how we feel and how we feel is what we do. There are insights based on this key idea- most importantly we can learn to change problem thoughts and we do this through thinking fixes, visualization and other brain strategies.

Consequence frameworks have an inherent danger of allowing unethical behaviour on the basis of the consequence justifying the means. The Cirf overcomes this with the use of the ethical guides of Love and Honesty. This is love of the world, others and ourselves where we care and respect based on consequence. It is also the honesty in our words and actions based on consequence. It is a love that gives us permission to fight to defend ourselves and an honesty that allows diplomacy with our friends. Ethical choices designed to help us survive and prosper.

The thinking fixes, visualizations and brain strategies of the Cirf are available through a new stress reduction program (https://www.calmconfidentme.com/stress-reduction-program) called Calm Confident Me. It packages the best of therapy techniques and practical experience in an 8 week self-improvement program. It is available for download at www.CalmConfidentMe.com and is written by a Masters qualified counselor with over 15 years of practical experience.
