Blue Jeanes competed in his first professional rodeo in 1996.

This week the former bull rider returns to where he competed in his first Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) event when the Victoria PRCA Rodeo opens at the community center on Thursday.

"Victoria used to have a rodeo back in the mid-90s," Jeanes recalled. "I was so young and excited about being in my first pro rodeo. I don't remember how I did. It was quite an accomplishment to make it to this level."

Jeanes, now a bull fighter responsible for protecting fallen riders from the bulls, will be part of a show that features some of the best cowboys and cowgirls around. The Victoria PRCA Rodeo will be hosted by the only eight-time world champion bull rider and Hall of Fame Cowboy Don Gay.

"There is nobody better than him at bull riding. He'll provide a lot of insight," Jeanes said. "Nobody knows more about bull riding than him."

The Victoria PRCA Rodeo will begin Thursday and conclude Friday with pro events beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Victoria Community Center. Livestock will be provided by the Frontier Rodeo Company. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 4-12. Doors open at 6 p.m.

"You'll see some of the same competitors that you see at bigger rodeos," Jeanes said. "It will be a fast-paced night with lots of action. Fans will be watching professionals who make their living from rodeos."

Events will include bareback, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and steer roping and bull riding.

"It'll be my job to give that rider a chance at escaping the bull (after falling off)," Jeanes explained. "Our job is to distract the bull and make ourselves a better target for the bull."

The two-day rodeo is part of the Texas Circuit, and points earned will count towards the Texas Circuit Finals and National Finals.
