Next-Generation Gaming Consoles | DHS Telegram | Dixon, CA

A few months ago rumors started to spread like wildfire about the next generation of gaming consoles. People were talking about a possible PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720, though nothing was confirmed about the consoles from Sony or Microsoft. That is until recently. Both Sony and Microsoft has confirmed the making of their next console, both shooting for releases in approximately a year. Gamers across the world are holding their breath until their releases, holding high expectations for the first new consoles by either Sony or Microsoft since 2006.

Before we look at what people want for the consoles, let?s look back at what the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 did well, and where they fell short.

The Xbox 360 has a fantastic online service, though that has come at a price. A yearly fee of fifty dollars is required for Xbox Live gold, which enables cross chat through games and a consitently great service, though the fee can add up. The Halo franchise, one of the most popular franchises in history, is also an Xbox eclusive. Even with the good, there is one main complaint with the system; the graphics are not as high as many gamers would wish. They are god, but there is no wow factor that makes you jump out of your socks in amzement.

PlayStation 3 does one thing absolutely exceptionally. Its graphics are outstanding, out performing all of its opponents in a landslide. This is one of the main components to the consoles success, and is sure continue onto the next system. Another bonus of the PlayStation 3 is the blu-ray player built in. With Blu-Rays being the newest media of entertainment, its capability of blu-ray movies draws many gamers to it. The one disadvantage of PlayStation is its online system. Though it may be free (you can pay for a VIP service though), the online service is glitchy, not as complex as Xbox Live, and is known to break down at points.

So now that we have seen what the current consoles are doing well and poorly, let?s look at the expectations for the next generation. Before we start, I would just like to say that I myself am a PC gamer. I like having a full keyboard and the graphics are great. At this point in time I do not see myself buying one of the new consoles, but if they did a few things that wowed me I may consider it. So what are these things I want to see and in some instances not see?

First, let?s start with the Xbox 720. I expect the graphics to be fantastic, rivaling, if not surpassing, the standard set by the?PlayStation 3. The online system needs to stay strong, with maybe a few minor enhancements here and there. Now let?s look at the unfortunate Kinect. There are many areas where the kinect is good, but it is just not something all gamers truly want. Microsoft needs to stop trying to force the Kinect down gamers throats and slowly let the Kinect die out like it is destined to do. Senior Chris Luney, a high user of the Xbox 360, said that for the Xbox 720 he would like to see, ?Perhaps things like a cheaper starting price and more gamesthat your actions change the outcome of the game or some kind of HD DVD player. And playing 360 games too is a must.?

Now to the PlayStation 4. The graphics once again must be superior, and if they again have graphics better than the rest that would be very impressive. The main area that needs improvement is the online service. If people pay for the better service, that?s what they get. The problem is that not a majority of people are willing to pay this extra money. This puts SOny in a difficult position. Make the gamers pay, thus enabling more money for a better service, or keep online free but sacrifice some quality issues. Other than online, PlayStation looks to continue on the path of success they have put themselves on.

At this point,?we have?been looking at what the systems could improve on or keep the same, but this?is not producing a wow factor. The two companies need to do something that is inivative, something that no one would have thought of before. They need to set the new standards for consoles. This has always been something Nintendo has been good at, though their ideas do not always pay off. The Wii started the crave for motion devices, thought that only lasted for a few years. The Wii U combined handheld gaming with console gaming, creating a contoller that is very inventive. Only problem is that Nintendo seems to be catering to a younger audience. If Sony and Microsoft could put the imagination of Nintendo into their next console, who knows what wonders we may see.
