Mathematics is??used in??almost all??jobs??and?trades?. ?To help studentsrealistically choose?a?profession?or?job??, it is?important?for them to be?know??math skills?needed?in?specific?career paths. ?If?your child???hates math and has??has struggled to??earned a grade better than a C in?a math?class, it may not be a good??choice??to set?sites on?a career in engineering. ?This article is not intended to discourage??children??from?pursuing?a chosencareer?, but instead to??educate students and parents?on the math skills?that are needed?and how?to improve students???understanding of math??so they can?pursue??their?chosen profession or trade.

Before I??talk about??the mathematics?requirements?for different??fields??, I would like to?talk about?what we??need to??do when a??child??isn?tsucceeding?in??mathmatics??but still??wants??to pursue aprofession??involving??math??. ?As I??mentioned??before, I am not trying to discourage anyone from a chosen??profession??. So, with that said, what can?teachers and parents?do for children to help them?be successful?in?math?so they canenter?a profession?of interest?.

First??off??, start when?children?are young. ?When children are young, they can?experience failure??that literally traumatize them for?the rest of their lives?. ?One of these experiences is feeling??like a failure??because of not?understanding?math. ?A commonmistake??is to allow young children?to use?a calculator for??math assignments?when they??have difficulty??doing it by hand. ? ?Early?In??math education, sets the?base??for more?advanced?mathematical??ideas??. ?Remember, if someone can?t?multiply??18 and 37??, he/she won?t be able to multiply?(2x + 3) and (5x ? 4)?. ?Doing??foundational??arithmetic is the?beginning?to mathematical?thinking?. ?Please do not?allow students to?use?calculators until they??understand??how to solve??mathematic??problems by hand. ?Even after?they are allowed to use calculators,?have?them??continuewith??mental math and?solve??problems??by??hand to keep?their?math skills??sharp?. ?Some?basic??ideas for mental math??can be??asking them?questions?about??the ?times? table,figuring out?the tip at a restaurant,??estimating???the tax on a bill, or even?adding-up??and estimating the total cost of items??you are buying??at the?grocery store?.

What about??children??that??have developed??negative feelings??concerning?math?? ?The thing?to do is go back in their??life??and??discover??when/where they?began not understanding?and disliking math. ??Re-teach and review??the?concepts?they?don?t understand?, andgo?forward to help them?become?more comfortable with??mathematics?. ???Much of the dislike???that some students have towards math is a result of?fear?. ?It?is?easier to say, ?I??hate??math,? then to??understand the feelings??and move?on??. ?There are?several?resources????available to help ??children???on their way to??mathematics?success. ?It will take?a lot of?work, but theresult?will be a?child?that??will have??a choice of any?career?.

Some of the online resources available are ??online geometry?,??virtual math lab?, and??virtual algebra??tutoring. ?There are?also many?learning centers and??tutors??that??can be found??through your local?school district or college??. ??what??ever resource(s) you choose,decide?what you expect?out of??tutoring or the learning??center??. ?Express?your goals to those?working?with your?child?, so you can worktogether?to best help your??student??succeed?. ?If you try a service and it?seems to make?your child anxious,??figure??out what is causing the anxiety and if?necessary?,?stop using that service?. ?Additional?anxiety?will only?reinforce the?dislike and fear?of??mathematics??. ?Also, you can?talk to?a school counselor to?discuss ideas??to help?your child cope with the??fear??. ?You can?even?consult a therapist if the anxiety seems to?overwhelm or debilitate?your child. ?

Taking steps to remove the??anxiety??of math can only?be a benefit to?your child. ?Which?everresources?you?choose?to use for your child (tutors, counselors, or therapists) will help him/her toovercome math anxiety?. ?Once the?anxiety?is under control, your?studentwill have the confidence to?succeed in?math?!
